The controls themselves react well and feel tight, which for those familiar with SHMUP style games, is paramount to successfully surviving for any real length of time. The layout on the controller is tight and well placed, with many of the buttons mappable. I personally found this to be the best way to play the game as the keyboard just felt clunky and slow by comparison. The game actually opens letting you know that you should be playing with a controller. Speaking of action, Drifting Lands was built from the ground up with the controller in mind. However, for the less focused this could get old quickly and leave you mashing the keyboard to skip to the action. For the lore lovers, you probably won’t notice and will most likely appreciate the time and care put into the story elements of the game. Although this was appreciated the lack of any real animation between dialog and action transitions did make the cut scenes fall a bit flat. For a game based in a genre that has also been called a bullet hell (not typically associated with story) it was refreshing to see this type of care taken.ĭelivery of said story (after the opening scene), is done mostly through the use of motion comic. I was quite impressed with the amount of story that was presented in those first few moments and even more surprised that this carried through as level progression took place. Story it seems, is a major element of Alkemi’s hybrid SHMUPRPG. The only habitable continents left are controlled by totalitarian corporations leaving you and your tribe flying from rock to rock searching for resources in order to survive.Īll of this back story is presented in a simple motion comic with some solid voice over work. Thrown into a future where your home planet has suffered a cataclysm that has left the planet shattered but still held together by unknown gravitational forces (because science!) You find yourself part of a group of nomadic outcasts.

So sit back and grab a coffee as we dive into Alkemi’s Sci-fi Shoot-em-up/RPG. With a mix of Shoot-em-up and RPG elements, Drifting Lands attempts to marriage two unique genres with a fair amount of success. Alkemi, a small independent studio based in France, set out to do that very thing and ‘Drifting Lands’ is their latest game with this genre marrying focus in mind. Technical aspectsĭrifting Lands for PC is easy on the eyes, with two-dimensional visuals kept in a colorful, cartoonish graphic style.Sometimes game developers take chances, mixing and matching genres in the hopes of creating something fresh and unique. Moreover, one's ship represents one of three classes (Marauder, Interceptor or Sentinel), which differ mainly in their speed, attack resistance and firepower. Those are complemented by equipment obtained on the journey – the player can equip their ship with different weapons and armor. The game also features complex RPG mechanics, offering seventy active and passive abilities – thanks to them, the player performs spectacular dodges, launches area attacks, and even controls the passage of time. Regardless of what difficulty the player chooses, victory is achieved through maneuvering one's ship effectively, juggling weapons skillfully, as well as both attacking and performing special moves. Different kinds of enemies take part in battles, including mainly combat drones which can be easily destroyed, smaller and bigger planes, and heavy cruisers, which serve the role of bosses. Fighting constitutes the core element of the experience. The game is divided into procedurally generated missions – a feature borrowed from roguelike titles. Like in any other shmup, the player constantly moves to the right and eliminates everything that comes in their way. Mechanicsĭrifting Lands for PC is played from a side view. The protagonist is thrown in the midst of such a company and assumes the role of a pilot, flying a combat ship during air battles, both fighting for survival and facing armies belonging to the corporations. The corporations are defied by a bunch of smaller and larger tribes, which comprise outcasts who earn their living as mercenaries and perform smuggling operations.
